CPD: knowledge maintenance & improvement
CPD is a key element to consider for newly graduated physiotherapists. Continuing professional development (CPD) is the ongoing process of developing and updating the knowledge and skills necessary to ensure competent professional practice (ISCP 1999-2014; http://www.iscp.ie/getting-started.html).
There is a mandatory requirement for members of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP) to have a minimum of 100 hours training over a three year period: 1 hour of CPD activity = 1 CPD points.
-A balance between formal & informal should be sought, with no less than 30 points being accumulated in either category
-A maximum of 10 points should be allowed for uncertified personal learning over the 3 year cycle
Activities which may count towards this include: Relevant courses, Conferences, Workshops, Formal Post-Grad course, Mandatory training - CPR, Manual handling, Fire, Safety etc, Journal clubs, Teaching, Preparing lectures, Student education / supervision, Research Publication / Abstract / Study, Presentations / posters, Service development, Committee work - ISCP, Self reported (summary of activity), Reviewing (books / journals / grants) and Reflection. These are samples of the activities which we can undertake post graduation to continue our professional development. This section gives further depth to the scope of CPD.
